We are absolutely smitten with our little man. Smith came barreling into the world only 3 hours and 50 minutes after my first contraction woke me up out of a sound sleep. I was hesitant if this was"it", as the end of this pregnancy has been so much different than my previous pregnancies and I had been having contractions for weeks. So, I waited it out a couple hours, as the contractions were coming strongly but just every 10 minutes. But the contractions continued to get more intense so we left for the hospital at 1am. Luckily my mother in law had been staying with us leading up to his birth. Had she not I'm pretty sure I would've had this kid in my bathroom. We rushed into Boston, hitting construction the whole way up the highway. I'm telling you it was like a scene out of a movie. I couldn't believe how quickly things went from manageable to unbearable. By the time we got to the hospital my contractions were coming every 2 minutes and were totally taking my breath away in a way I have never experience before. I was bent over in pain with every one. Well, thank God we made it to Labor and Delivery and they took us right into a room. They checked us in, had me change, while I just did my best to control the pain - it was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I rolled, I sat up, I stood up, I just tried to do whatever to make it through the pain but nothing was helping. All while I answered 6,000 questions. I just remember looking up at Mike and saying "I really don't think I can do this." The doctor came in and checked me and said I was 7cm. So we talked about getting an epidural ASAP. They had me sign the papers, get my IV, take the shot of whatever it is they give you before an epidural and at this point the pain was so intense and there was no break between contractions. Next thing I knew I looked at the nurse and said "I think he's coming out." The doctor checked me again - I would say this was 2 minutes after the initial check and said I was fully dilated. It was time to push. Forget the epidural. 3 pushes later we met our Smith! Phew! Talk about a whirlwind! He was in our arms just 30 minutes after we checked in at the hospital.
Mom and baby are doing great! Smith is as healthy as can be and mom is feeling totally back to herself already. We could not be more blessed.
And like they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words.
This was when we got home and the kids saw Smith for the first time. Those smiles have not left their faces and I suspect they won't for awhile. Smith is sure to be the most spoiled baby around.
Here's Mike and I just minutes after Smith was born...in shock and awe of how it all went down. But so so thankful for the blessing of another beautiful, healthy baby.
Welcome to the world, Smith Joseph!
We love you more than words can say.
